Joy Children's Centre | A Tapestry of Hope and Home

As part of our preparations for our 20th Anniversary, at the end of last year, we asked a couple of our partners whether they would like to take part in an art project.

Simply put: what is the view from your window?

We were absolutely astonished by the beautiful output from the Joy Children’s Centre in Kenya. But before the big reveal of their incredible tapestry, here’s an introduction of the story of their artwork in the words of Sarah Waithaka, the founder of the Joy Children’s Centre.

“The artwork is presented in the form of a window, where the view is from our school bus, symbolically offering a view into the life, growth, and daily experiences of children at Joy Children’s Home. Each window panel illustrates a key area of support made possible through partnerships, with African Children’s Fund playing a central role in ensuring the holistic well-being of the children.”

“Window One: Education and Learning

The first panel depicts children walking to school against a backdrop of green hills and a clearly marked school building. This window represents access to education, emphasising African Children’s Fund’s support in enabling children to attend school consistently. The imagery highlights learning as a foundation for hope and future opportunity, showing children equipped with school bags and guided by a safe and supportive environment.

Window Two: Safe Play and Social Development

The second window illustrates children engaging in play within a school compound. This scene reflects a safe and nurturing environment where children are free to interact, play, and develop social skills. It demonstrates how African Children’s Fund’s support contributes to the overall well-being of the children by ensuring not only academic growth but also emotional and social development through structured and secure spaces.

Window Three: Feeding and Sustainability

The third panel focuses on feeding and food security, showing children seated together during mealtime alongside a thriving kitchen garden. This window highlights African Children’s Fund’s contribution to providing daily nutritious meals and supporting sustainable food initiatives. The presence of vegetables and farming elements symbolises self-reliance, health, and consistency in meeting the children’s nutritional needs.

Window Four: Accommodation, Health, and Transport

The final window presents essential infrastructure, including safe housing, access to healthcare, and reliable transport. The school bus and health facility imagery represent safe accommodation, access to medical care, and dependable transportation, all of which are critical to the children’s comfort and stability. This panel underscores African Children’s Fund’s role in ensuring that children live in a secure environment where their basic needs are met comprehensively.

In conclusion, the windows tell a unified story of holistic care. Through education, feeding, accommodation, health, and transport, the artwork communicates how African Children’s Fund’s continued support has enabled Joy Children’s Home to provide a stable, hopeful, and nurturing environment. The window concept reinforces transparency, partnership, and shared vision, offering a clear view of how collaborative support translates into improved lives for the children.
