Privacy Policy

This privacy policy explains how African Children’s Fund uses any personal information we collect about you when you use this website.

Who are we?

African Children’s Fund is a registered charity in England and Wales (1114699) and our registered office address is: Silver Birch House, Cow Lane, Longworth, Abingdon, Oxon, OX13 5EJ.

What information do we collect about you?

We collect information about you in the form of name, address, telephone number and email. This is collected when you complete the form on our website to register for our newsletter, when you enquire about fundraising, when you volunteer for us or when you make a donation. We also collect information on your taxpayer status if you tell us your donations are eligible for Gift Aid. We use cookies on our website to track visitor use of the website and to compile statistical reports on website activity.

How will we use the information about you?

African Children’s Fund takes care to protect your personal information and does not share it with any third party, other than the software systems we have chosen carefully to support our activities.

We hold and process supporters' personal data for a number of reasons:

  • To keep supporters updated about our projects, fundraising activities and appeals

  • To keep a record of donations made and to claim Gift Aid on donations

  • To support volunteers

  • To support community-based fundraising

  • To ensure we do not send unwanted information to supporters or members of the public who have informed us that they do not wish to be contacted

How will we store the information about you?

African Children’s Fund stores the information you provide us in secure, protected systems which are only accessible by authorised staff with username and password entry.

Transfers outside of the UK and European Economic Area

We will store or transfer some or all of your personal data to countries that are not part of the UK or European Economic Area (the “EEA” consists of all EU member states, plus Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein). These are known as “third countries” and may not have data protection laws that are as strong as those in the UK and/or the EEA. This means that we will take additional steps in order to ensure that your personal data are treated just as safely and securely as they would be within the UK and under our Data Protection Legislation as follows:

  • We share your data with external third parties (software providers such as Mailchimp) that are based outside of the UK & EEA. The following safeguards are applied to such transfers:

    • We will only transfer your personal data to third countries whose levels of data protection are deemed ‘adequate’ by the Information Commissioner’s Office.

    • We use specific contracts with external third parties that are approved by the Information Commissioner’s Office and European Commission for the transfer of personal data to third countries. These contracts require the same levels of personal data protection that would apply under the Data Protection Legislation. More information is available from the European Commission.

    • Where we transfer your data from the UK to a third party based in the US additional steps have been taken to ensure your personal data will be treated as securely and safely as it would be in the UK and under the GDPR.  We check whether or not the US-based organisation is certified to the UK extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.  If not, we continue to rely on signed Data Processing Agreements with our data processors based on model contract clauses provided by the Information Commissioner’s Office and European Commission (also known as ‘standard contract clauses’), which impose suitable data protection standards on a contractual basis.

Please contact us using the contact details provided below for further information about the particular data protection mechanisms used when transferring your personal data to a third country.

How long will we keep your personal information?

We will hold your personal information on our systems for as long as is necessary for the relevant activity, for example we will keep a record of donations subject to gift aid for at least seven years to comply with HMRC rules.
