Recycling Programme Updates

Due to changes in the TerraCycle collection model, we will shortly be stopping our participation in both the Pladis Biscuits and Snacks Recycling Programme and the Air, Home and Laundry Care Recycling Programme.

Please note, the final day for returning your compatible recycling to our Witney shop for either of these programmes is Saturday 1st August. After this date, our Witney team will unfortunately no longer be able to accept any biscuit wrappers or home cleaning products for recycling.

We will, however, continue to accept the following items for recycling in all our charity shops:

  • Textiles - including clothing, linen, bedding etc.

  • Paired shoes

  • Jewellery

  • Watches

  • Mobile phones

  • Sat navs

  • Games consoles

  • iPods/MP3 players

  • Cameras

  • Stamps

  • Coins

  • Foreign Money

As well as promoting reuse of second-hand items, charity shops like ours in Faringdon, Grove and Witney have an important role to play in recycling and reducing landfill. The Charity Retail Association estimates over 90% of clothing and books donated to charity shops are either sold for reuse, or recycled.

They also report that in 2018/19, 339,000 tonnes of textiles were saved from landfill as a result of charity retail in the UK. As local Councils are charged £94.15 per tonne in Landfill Tax, charity shops have saved them almost £32 million in charges! That’s £32 million to spend on services for local residents instead. Plus your charity of choice benefits hugely from your kindness.

Remember, it costs just 7 pence to provide a child with a nutritious mug of porridge through our Porridge Club programmes so even if your items aren’t suitable for resale, we recycle as much as possible so they will still make a difference to children born into poverty in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Pennies = Porridge!
